Which is consumed more in India, tea or coffee?

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

In 2018, India produced 316 million kg of coffee. Of this, only 30% was consumed domestically, i.e. less than 100 million kg.

Compare this to the 1,267 million kg of tea produced in India (2016 data). About 75% of this was consumed locally, i.e. 950 million kg.

It takes about 2 gm of tea to make one cup whereas it takes 10 gm of coffee beans to make one, so about 500 billion cups of tea and 10 billion cups of coffee.

Nearly 50 cups of tea for every cup of coffee are consumed by Indians each year!

If anyone had a doubt that we are a nation of tea drinkers, this factoid should settle it.
